Traveling abroad this summer? What would you do if you broke your leg while hiking in the mountains? What if you fell ill and needed a trip to an emergency room in a foreign country? You might be surprised to learn that most U.S. health insurance plans don’t cover emergency or routine medical care while you are traveling overseas.
If you need this care, you might get hit with a costly medical bill high enough to scuttle the rest of your vacation plans.
That’s where travel insurance comes in. You can purchase a travel insurance policy to help cover the cost of any routine or emergency medical care you receive while traveling abroad. These temporary policies, which typically only provide coverage for two to three weeks, might also reimburse you for any car rentals, hotel reservations, and booked flights you must cancel if your travel plans suddenly change. Travel insurance can also reimburse you if your airline loses or damages your luggage or if you must rent a hotel room because your flight is delayed.
When you’re ready to order travel insurance, you’ll have plenty of providers from which to choose. That includes Richmond, Virginia-based Allianz Travel Insurance. Is purchasing a policy from Allianz a smart move? It can be: The company offers a wide variety of travel insurance plans that can meet the needs of travelers planning a single trip or those who schedule several vacations a year. Our Allianz travel insurance review will help you understand the ins and outs of the policy.

What is Allianz Travel Insurance?

Travel can introduce you to new experiences and adventures. It can also be risky. You can injure yourself while scuba diving in the ocean. You might need a trip to the emergency room after hiking up the side of a mountain. You might even need an ambulance ride to a doctor after trying exotic foods in gourmet restaurants.
Then there are the other travel risks: If you must cancel your plans, can you get reimbursed for the vacation home you’ve already rented? What if someone steals your luggage after you arrive at your hotel? Who will reimburse you for the replacement costs?
That’s where Allianz Travel Insurance can help.
According to its website, travel insurance policies from Allianz, depending on the level of plan you purchase, provide the following coverages:
  • Emergency medical transportation and dental care. This covers the costs of covered medical and dental emergencies that happen during your trip.
  • Trip cancellation. This covers the cost of your prepaid, non-refundable expenses — including booked hotel rooms, flights, and rental cars — if you must cancel your trip for a covered reason.
  • Trip interruption. This coverage will reimburse you for the unused, non-refundable portion of your trip and any increased transportation costs to return home if you must interrupt your trip for a covered reason.
  • Emergency transportation. This coverage will provide transportation to the nearest hospital or medical facility if you suffer a covered illness or injury.
  • Baggage loss/damage. You'll be reimbursed for any baggage loss, damage, or theft during your trip.
  • Baggage delay. This coverage reimburses you for any purchases of essential items during your trip if your airline, cruise line, or other travel service delays your baggage.
  • Travel delay. This reimburses you for any expenses you incur, including hotel stays and meals, if your trip is delayed for a specific time and a covered reason.
  • Change-fee coverage. If you must change your airline or rail ticket for a covered reason, you'll be reimbursed for any fees you must pay.
  • Collision/loss damage. This covers your costs if your rental car is stolen or damaged in a covered accident or while you leave it unattended.

How does Allianz Travel Insurance work?

When signing up for insurance through Allianz, you can choose from several plans, including single-trip and multi-trip insurance.
Single-trip plans, included in Allianz's OneTrip category of policies, provide coverage for trips lasting up to 180 days. You'll generally pay a higher price for longer trips than shorter ones.
Allianz also offers annual travel insurance plans that cover as many trips as you can take in a year. These trips are covered under Allianz's AllTrips coverage options.
These plans will cost more than Allianz's OneTrip policies. Allianz’s OneTrip and AllTrips plans are broken into different tiers: Basic, Prime, and Premier. There’s also the Executive plan that is designed for business travelers. Prime and Premier plans include additional coverages than those offered by Basic plans, such as epidemic coverage if you must cancel a trip because you or a traveling partner are diagnosed with an epidemic disease such as COVID-19, and Trip Change Protector, which pays up to $500 if you must cancel or change your airline, rail, cruise or tour itinerary for a covered reason.
To file a claim, visit Allianz Travel Insurance's website. You'll need your email address or policy number and your departure date or the date you purchased your policy.
You'll also need to provide documents to support your claim. Allianz provides this list of supporting documents you might need when making a claim.
Allianz also offers its TravelSmart App, which you can download from the App Store or Google Play. You can use this app to file a claim, too. If you'd prefer, you can also file a claim by email at claimsinquiry@allianzassistance.com, fax your claim to 804-673-1469 or mail it to Allianz Global Assistance, P.O. Box 71533, Richmond, VA 23255-1533.

Allianz Travel Insurance Review
I selected the "single trip" option. When I input that I was a 45-year-old resident of Illinois traveling to Italy from April 22 through April 29 of 2024 and that my trip would cost $4,700,
Allianz gave me three travel insurance plan options.
The OneTrip Premier plan would cost $357, while a OneTrip Prime plan would run $275. The most affordable plan, OneTrip Basic, would cost $206. These costs will vary depending on your age, where you are traveling, how much you plan on spending during your trip, and the length of your vacation.
The different plan levels also offer different levels of protection. All three plans offer $5,000 of trip cancellation coverage. The Basic plan offers $5,000 of coverage for trip interruption, while Premier and Prime plans each offer $7,500 under this protection.
The Premier plan offers trip-change protector coverage of $1,000, while the Prime plan offers $500. The Basic plan does not offer this coverage.
The Premier plan offers $75,000 worth of emergency medical and dental coverage. The Prime plan offers $50,000 of coverage, while the Basic version comes with $10,000 of this coverage.
The amount of coverage for emergency transportation varies, too, with Allianz's Premier plan offering $1 million of coverage, its Prime plan $500,000, and its Basic $10,000.

Allianz Travel Insurance features

In addition to medical and dental coverage, Allianz Travel Insurance plans offer plenty of other coverages.
  • Concierge services. Some Allianz plans to offer concierge services where staffers can obtain reservations at restaurants, hotels, and events. These staffers can also provide information about things to do at your destination.
  • 24-hour hotline. Allianz offers a 24-hour hotline for travel emergencies. Hotline staffers can help you find medical professionals, track down lost documents or luggage, send a message to someone at home, or find a lawyer in your destination city.
  • Cancel anytime. Allianz’s Cancel Anytime feature reimburses you 80% of your costs if you must cancel your trip for any reason not already covered by your travel insurance policy. This is an optional upgrade that you can purchase.
  • Rental car insurance. You can also purchase rental car insurance through Allianz, which will pay out up to $50,000 if your car is damaged in an accident, damaged while you leave it unattended, or stolen. This protection costs $11 per calendar day.

Who is Allianz Travel Insurance best for?

An Allianz Travel Insurance policy is a smart choice for many travelers.

Ideal for those who take international travel

Allianz Travel Insurance is best for travelers planning trips to international destinations. That’s because U.S. health insurance plans typically don’t cover medical care for emergencies while you are not in the country. An Allianz plan can protect you if you suffer an accident or illness while traveling abroad.

Those planning several trips

You can choose an AllTrip plan from Allianz to receive a travel insurance policy for a full year. This way, you’ll receive coverage for as many trips as you take during the year.

Those looking for lower-priced insurance

You can choose a Basic Allianz plan to receive the lowest premiums. This plan still provides medical and dental coverage, along with trip cancellation and trip interruption protection, though the coverage is lower.

Those looking for comprehensive protection

Allianz plans not only cover medical care but also reimburse you if you must cancel your trip, if your airline loses your luggage, if you need to stay in a hotel because of flight or cruise delays, or if your rental car is totaled in an accident.

Who shouldn’t use Allianz Travel Insurance?

This doesn’t mean that Allianz Travel Insurance is right for everyone.

You’re only traveling domestically

If you are not traveling outside the United States, you probably don’t need to purchase travel insurance. Just make sure that your health insurance provider offers coverage for injuries or illnesses that you might suffer when in another state. Your credit card provider might offer many of the other protections that Allianz plans offer, such as rental car coverage, trip delay insurance, and trip cancellation insurance.

Your health insurance covers you even when you’re out of the country

If you’re fortunate enough to have a health insurance plan that covers your costs even when you are not in the United States, you probably don’t need additional travel insurance.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Affordable. Prices will vary depending on your destination, length of your stay and plan level, but you can expect to pay about $200 for a week-long international trip for a basic Allianz travel insurance plan.
  • Flexible. You can choose from several plans when choosing an Allianz travel insurance policy, from a bare-bones basic plan to a deluxe plan offering a wider range of coverages. You can also choose from a single-trip plan, an annual policy or a plan that caters to business travelers.
  • There’s an app. Allianz offers its TravelSmart app that allows you to file claims, add coverages and make payments with your smart phone.
  • Easy to file claims. Filing claims is easy. You can do so through Allianz’s app or website. You can also file claims by email, fax or snail mail.
Cons
  • Insurance coverage is limited for basic plans. Allianz’s basic plans are more affordable, but they offer more limited coverage. Allianz’s basic OneTrip plan, for instance, offers just $10,000 of medical and dental coverage.
  • You will have to provide paperwork when filing a claim. Allianz says that you’ll have to file documents supporting your claims. For instance, if you need emergency medical care, you’ll have to provide the bill and paperwork from your emergency room or doctor visit.
  • Some benefits might already be offered by your credit card provider. Some of the coverages that Allianz offers might already be provided by your credit cards. For instance, many credit cards offer car rental insurance. You might not need to purchase that coverage from Allianz. Many also offer protection if your trip is delayed or your luggage is lost, coverage that Allianz also provides.

FAQs

What does Allianz consider to be non-refundable travel costs?
Allianz’s trip cancellation will pay out to help cover your non-refundable travel costs if you must cancel a trip. Allianz says that non-refundable costs include pre-paid trip deposits and payments that would be lost if you had to cancel your trip for a covered reason. This can include hotel rooms, rental car fees, tickets for tours and events and airline ticket purchases.
Does everyone I’m traveling with need a separate travel insurance policy?
Yes. Allianz says that every person on a trip should purchase his or her own travel insurance policy.
Do my kids need to purchase travel insurance?
That depends. If you purchase the OneTrip Prime or OneTrip Premier plan from Allianz, children 17 and under are covered for free if they are traveling with a parent or grandparent. Allianz’s AllTrips Premier plan can also cover an entire household. Otherwise, you’ll have to purchase an Allianz travel insurance policy for your children.
Does an Allianz travel insurance policy cover pets?
It does not. Allianz, though, does consider service animals as family members. Any benefits that apply to family members, then, would also apply to service animals. It’s important to note that emotional support or therapy animals are not considered service animals.

The bottom line

If you’re traveling out of the country and want options for travel insurance plans, Allianz can help. This insurer offers a variety of plans, including those catering to budget travelers and those willing to spend more for additional protection. And do you plan on taking several trips in a year? Allianz offers an AllTtrips plan that will cover your travels for an entire year and give you peace of mind.
