Ever since I learned how to play Hearts in college, it has been one of my favorite card games. Yet, I struggle to find anyone in my circle of friends who can play. So I get my kicks by playing it on my iPad. And my gameplay app of choice is Big Hearts.

What is Big Hearts?

Big Hearts is an app-based version of the card game Hearts, developed by Big Run Studios Inc. Just as the pandemic hit in the spring of 2020, Big Hearts' release date was the end of February, and it turned out to be a good game to pass the time. Available for iOS and Android through the App Store and Google Play, the colorful app features beautiful graphics and easy controls and is a great game for anyone looking for handheld fun.
In this game, the goal is earning the lowest number of Hearts points. A Heart point is equal to the card, with the Queen of Spades a dreaded card that will add 13 points to your hand if you take a Trick with it in it. The star player with the lowest Hearts points wins the round. This isn’t a game where you want the highest score! If you Shoot the Moon, however, you can win with the Queen of Spades, as long as you have all 13 Hearts. Then you receive 0 Points while your opponent takes 26.

Real cash winnings

Big Hearts is like many short games you can play for money. As you play free games, you earn enough to continue playing for free to advance in your games. Play enough and, like other players, skills may be improved enough to want to enter real cash games. These are available through earned bonus prizes or depositing additional funds into your account.
As a Skillz-powered gaming app, Big Hearts joins the family of games where egamers have seen serious results (although it is not the norm). The biggest prize winner was an egamer who won $46,000 in a tournament in 2014.

How to play Big Hearts

You'll be given a tutorial once you download the free app on your iPhone or Android phone. Each opponent is dealt 13 cards, and the remaining deck is then in shared play between the two. At the start, you can select three cards to pass.

The game will select the starting opponent. Players must play a card of the same suit as the lead card, with the highest suit card winning the trick. If you don’t have a card of the suit led, you can play any card, but you will lose it as it’s the highest card of the suit that wins, so play your lowest cards and keep your highest cards in hand.
If an opponent receives the Queen of Spades, you receive 1,300 Match Points. (The opponent’s avatar is marked with the Queen, so you know who has it.)
If you win a trick and someone has added a Hearts card, you lose 25 Match Points. When an opponent gets Hearts from a trick, you receive 100 Match Points.

You want NOT to take Hearts or the Queen, and I strive to avoid taking any tricks.
After your tutorial, you’ll have a chance to play a Practice Round to determine your skill level and be matched with an opponent at the same level. You’ll have 5 minutes to play only three short rounds, which is enough to learn the game. Once you determine your biggest competitor, you can also receive bonus points if you give the Golden Player Hearts or the Queen of Spades.

I placed First, which provides a 1,000 bonus. Complete the rounds quickly, and you’ll earn a time bonus. I didn’t take a single Heart or a Queen of Spades; my total Points were 15,800, earning me First Place. There are lots of ways to earn extra points.

Every time you win or lose a match, you can earn Ticketz, which is how any Skillz-based game operates. For winning a match, you earn 2 Ticketz; a loss only earns you 1 Ticketz, which is the cost of entering another match, so you can keep playing for free. There are also daily bonuses to reward you for hopping every day.
