One of my favorite things about New York City parks is the tables where friends and strangers can play chess, checkers, or dominoes together. It's quite charming in this day and age when everything we do seems to be connected to something with a battery.

Still, like everyone else, I'm often on my iPhone playing games to pass the time. I've played chess against strangers, competed in Words With Friends, and attempted to outwit players in Scrabble. I like classic games, which is why I took a look at Dominoes Gold. And then discovered I could play for real money, too.

How does Dominoes Gold work?

After downloading Dominoes Gold for my iOS from the app store, I was taken through a tutorial on playing, which I skipped right over since I know how to play Dominoes. Then, you can pick an avatar and start with a practice match.

I had to beat the computer before my opponent did. I was given 7 minutes of playing time to get my first score. I beat the computer, earning 105 points and a total score of 140 since I won so quickly, never once needing to take more bones from the boneyard.

Sadly, while I thought I had won, I came in second against her. I only earned 1 Ticketz, a Skillz-powered game feature to "buy" into more games. The more Ticketz one earns, the more perks in gameplay. It costs 1 Ticketz to play a game, so coming in second means earning enough to play another round.

Ticketz can also earn real prizes, although it takes quite a bit. The featured prizes include a Google Chromecast that requires 1.20 million Ticketz to take home, a 55-inch 4K Smart TV that requires 18 million, and a Skillz Sticker that only requires 1,000 Ticketz. (Yes, that is sarcasm.)

Skip the Ticketz and prizes for the real fun. This is a Skillz game, and like all of its mobile games, it's about fun games where you can win real-world prizes. Deposit money into your account to compete for real cash in competitive domino games, including:

Live 1v1 Dominoes: I could choose from $1.80 to $260 for an entry and a chance to win $3 to $425.

Dominoes Court: This four-person bracket tournament lasts 24 hours, with finalists winning $2 and winners earning $6 with a $3 entry fee. These competitive dominoes tournaments do get bigger with larger pots at the end.

Pro League: These special tournaments offer big prizes. At press time, the $80,000 Bonfire Shuffle had a $7,500 grand prize. Winners who reach $100 in winnings earn 10,000 Ticketz and 100k Ticketz at $500 in winnings.

How much does Dominoes Gold cost?

It's free to download and play Dominoes Gold. But just like many gaming apps, you may have to pay for more chances to play or if you want some boosts. And if you want to earn money to play games, you can pay to play.

Keep using your Ticketz to compete for free. You'll only win a maximum of 2, but if you keep winning, you can build up your stash of Ticketz. If you want to pay to play, deposit your funds safely into your account through the app.
