These days, you can find any game you love under the sun available in app format to play online. You can even play pool online with the Pool Payday app. Is it as fun as a game of pool and hearing the sound of balls connecting and landing in a pocket? Not quite. Will it help you improve your game? Certainly not. But playing pool on an app could score you some healthy competition and maybe a little coin when you play. Learn more about Pool Payday here.

What is Pool Payday?

Developed by Hidden Pixel Games, LLC and powered by Skillz, Pool Payday is one of many Skillz games that provides online tournaments for players to win real cash and make money while having a lot of fun, as well as one of the best apps for those looking for pool games.
Pool Payday is available for iPhone and iPad users through the iOS App Store. Android device users can also download the game from the Google Play Store.
Cash tournaments aren't available in Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, Montana, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee.

How does Pool Payday work?

I downloaded the game from the app store to my iPhone to learn more about the game. Like many Skillz-powered games, I could set up an avatar and follow a tutorial before playing some practice games of Pool Payday: 8 Ball Billiards. The tutorial shows new players how to line up their cues and take shots with the press of a button, but I found it a bit tricky to manage on my phone.

My first practice round, with three balls to try, resulted in a big, old goose egg. I didn't get a single ball into a pocket. My second practice game earned me a trick shot with a nice score that landed me in first place (the highest score wins), but honestly, that trick shot was an accident!
Playing games through Skillz means you earn Ticketz after each game: 2 for winning and one for second place. Then each game after the practice games requires one Ticketz to play. This means you can always keep playing for free, and it can become an addicting game.
However, the point of Skillz games is to get gamers to compete. Ticketz can earn real prizes and cash, but you'll have to win whole lotta games to earn those. You'll need 540K Ticketz to earn enough for a Skillz Hoodie and even 1,000 Ticketz to earn a Skillz sticker.

Most users (myself included) don't find this worth it. And that's the point. Skillz wants you to move into league play.
In Leagues, you can play real-time tournaments to win guaranteed prizes. My first practice games gave me a popup explaining that I needed three more games to unlock a league with a prize of $15,985 and 150K in Z tokens. Nearly $16,000 is some serious cold cash prize!

How much does Pool Payday cost?

It's free to download and play Pool Payday with unlimited play. But just like many gaming apps, you may have to pay for more chances to play or if you want some boosts. And if you want the chance to earn money to play games, you can pay.
Adding money to my account via PayPal, I could choose different competitions. As a rookie, I could play head-to-head with another rookie. It would cost just $0.60 to enter, and if I won, I'd get $1 and 50 Ticketz - a much faster way to earn real prizes and some chump change.
Another option was the Topaz 3-Round. For a $2 entry fee, I could enter a competition for a chance to win $300 and 150 Ticketz. You could find competitions that match your skill level, too.
