Progressive Homeowners Insurance Review

Progressive Homeowners Insurance Review
When my wife and I were considering buying our first home, we were very focused on how the cost of a mortgage, property taxes, and potentially PMI would impact our monthly budget. One thing we didn’t at first consider was that instead of renters insurance, we would need home insurance, and that insurance cost would be something else to factor into home ownership.
Of course, we knew that insurance coverage was important if we were going to leap into buying property. Just like life insurance or auto insurance, having a homeowners insurance policy would protect our new home and personal belongings should disaster strike. While we wouldn’t have to worry about flood insurance living on the third floor in a condo, things like dwelling coverage and loss of use protections were as important to us as protections for our personal property as they were for our personal finances.
When it comes to homeowners insurance companies, a wide range of options are available to you. One insurance provider you’re likely to come across is Progressive. Keep reading the insurance review to learn more about the ins and outs of insurance with Progressive and how the insurance company compares to other home insurance companies on the market.

What is Progressive homeowners Insurance?

As an insurer, Progressive offers more than 30 types of coverage and financial products. From car insurance to life insurance and recreational insurance, a wide range of options are available to policyholders using Progressive.
One thing to note about Progressive’s homeowners insurance is that they aren’t the company underwriting your policy. Instead, they offer the “Progressive Home Advantage” and partner with other insurers for their home insurance policies. This means that your Progressive policy and coverage options may vary depending on who you are paired with while getting home insurance quotes.

How does Progressive homeowners Insurance work?

Getting started with Progressive for homeowners insurance is relatively simple. Navigate to their website and click the property coverage button. If you’d like to do this over the phone, call them at 1-866-407-4844.

After selecting property coverage, you’ll be asked to choose what kind of property you’re insuring. This includes options for homes, condos, renters insurance, and even mobile homes. You also have the choice to bundle your auto policy at this time, which, on average, saves you 5-7%. You’ll also need to put your zip code in to get a localized quote.

After entering your zip code, you’ll need to enter the property address of the home you’re looking to insure, as well as some other personal information about you. This includes your first and last name and date of birth, which will be used as part of Progressive’s HomeQuote Explorer tool to help you compare rates.

After you input that information, Progressive will gather specific details about the property you seek coverage. You’ll be able to edit things as needed for accuracy. Then, you will be asked a few questions, including whether this home will be your primary residence if you currently have home insurance, whether or not you’ve filed an insurance claim in the last five years, and a few other questions about the property.

You’ll also be able to lower your rate by immediately answering a bevy of questions that qualify you for discounts. These include fire safety, security features, how old the roof is, and much more. You’ll also add more information about yourself as an owner, including your marital status, if you have a co-applicant, and how many people will be living at home.

After that, it’s time to get your rates! Progressive offers three options within its trusted network of insurers: a basic option, a popular option, and a deluxe option. Each option includes specific details, so you know what you’re getting with each provider.

How much does Progressive homeowners Insurance cost?

Home insurance rates can vary widely depending on where you live, the size of your home, and the type of coverage you get. Playing with Progressive’s calculators, it’s easy to see how coverage limits, deductibles, and replacement costs affect average insurance premiums.
In the example above, I was quoted basic coverage at $3646 annually, including a higher deductible, and popular coverage at $3781 yearly. Additionally, Progressive offered me deluxe coverage at $4097 a year, which came with increased replacement costs, increased liability coverage limits, and a water backup protection add-on.
Progressive offers some insurance discounts, including bundling with other insurance policies, which can save you about 5% to 7% on average. They also offer discounts for certain security and fire safety features and for updating your plumbing, HVAC, and electric.

Progressive Homeowners Insurance features

Coverage in key areas

While your mileage may vary based on what insurance company you’re partnered with through Progressive, their homeowners policies generally cover the standard aspects of home insurance. These include things like:
  • Damage to your house, including attached garages or sunrooms
  • Replacement costs for damaged or stolen belongings for covered losses
  • Loss of use if your home is undergoing repairs
  • Medical payments for visitor injuries on your property
  • Personal liability for a personal injury on property

Powerful matchmaking tool

As you can probably tell from the section about getting a quote with Progressive, their quote process is far more extensive than that of some of their competitors. While answering many questions up front means that you have a bit more work to do, especially when researching your property and its history, all of this can really pay off. The more detailed you are, the better Progressive can match you with an insurer in their network.

Good variety of discounts

Progressive goes out of its way to try to set you up with as many discounts as possible. From fire alarms to home updates, its quote process captures anything that could qualify you for a discount. Additionally, policyholders who bundle with Progressive auto insurance frequently save between 5% and 7% on their policy.

Who is Progressive homeowners Insurance best for?

If you would like to compare and shop and don’t mind having your insurance policy outsourced to another company, Progressive is a great option. Their detailed quote process can be completed online in about ten minutes and immediately provides information about your policy and coverage. This makes it easy to make an informed choice on your coverage.

Who shouldn’t use Progressive homeowners Insurance?

If you want to know who you’re getting your insurance coverage through, you won’t want homeowners coverage with Progressive. If you’re uncomfortable working with Progressive as a broker, other options on the market may be a better fit.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Detailed quote process. Progressive has a detailed online process for collecting your information as a home insurance applicant. While this takes more time than other insurance options, it also means that you get more detailed policy documents while quoting insurance options.
  • Name Your Price tool. Progressive's Name Your Price tool really sets it apart. This tool helps them find the closest coverage to fit your budget and other living expenses.
  • Mobile app. If you need to handle the claims process or your bill on the go, you’ll be happy to know that Progressive offers a mobile app to help you manage these tasks. It’s available on Android devices as well as iOS devices
Cons
  • Not available in all 50 states. Progressive is only available in 48 of the 50 United States, so that can be a bit of a bummer, depending on your home location.
  • Coverage can vary. As was previously mentioned, because Progressive doesn’t underwrite their homeowners insurance policies, your coverage may be different depending on where you live or who you’re paired with. This makes it hard to evaluate the company as a whole when it comes to home insurance coverage.
  • Dogs can be a dealbreaker. One question you’re asked in the quote process with Progressive has to do with whether or not you own a dog. This is because, depending on where you live, you may have to contend with a banned dog list to get homeowners insurance coverage.

Geico, like Progressive, is a broker when it comes to home insurance. However, unlike Progressive, Geico does offer coverage in all 50 states. Additionally, Geico has a better A.M. Best rating than Progressive, although Progressive doesn’t have too poor of a score when it comes to their rating based on financial health.

Allstate

Allstate offers home insurance coverage in all 50 states and has an A+ ranking from AM Best, just like Progressive. Allstate performs better than Progressive in its JD Power Ranking, about 10 points higher. Notably, 809/1000 is still an overall ranking of about 81%.

Nationwide

Ironically, for a company called Nationwide, homeowners insurance is not available in all 50 states with this insurer. They do have the best JD Power rating of the bunch when it comes to homeowners insurance, although the A.M. Best rank is the lowest of these four insurers.

The bottom line

While Progressive doesn’t underwrite its insurance policies, that doesn’t mean you should immediately avoid them for your home insurance. If you really value flexibility and the power of choice, there can be a big benefit to using Progressive for your home insurance. When you fill out Progressive’s home insurance policy quote form online, you’ll input much information about yourself and the property you’re insuring. This allows them to offer very targeted, highly detailed information about three different insurance options.
Progressive’s “Name Your Price” tool is also a boon to homeowners on a budget who need to make the most of their personal finances. However, there are some drawbacks to using Progressive as your home insurance broker. These include limited availability from state to state and the potential for certain dog breeds to disqualify you from coverage. Since Progressive is a broker, there’s no real standard to what you will or won’t get using them as an insurer.
Even so, there are enough perks to make Progressive worth exploring as you shop around for home insurance. Especially if you appreciate detailed overviews of the value each price point is getting you, they can be a great place to start your home insurance shopping journey.
